A little son has come to his father... Everything was approximately as it was; only the little son will be 12 years old soon and according to him he is an advanced user. If his statement is to be translated into Russian, then it means that his computer speakers have become morally obsolete equipment, too small and in general he needs normal sound, but not the plastic parody.

Complexities of the choice

Last weekend I with my son went to the Mitino radioelectronics market (the more so because we live nearby) with the purpose to buy speakers we want. I have never thought that my offspring has such steep demands to the sound.

We roamed about the market for a long time, I was almost in despair that we could be able to choose something at all – all plastic variants of speakers were rejected out of hand, active speakers did not suit by reason of the background noise in loudspeakers without load.

Some models suited us in full except their designs. In other models designs suited, but the sound left much to be desired. In other models both the sound and design suited, but their functional was not sufficient.

Finally we stumbled across the SVEN MS-3000. This model suited my son completely, but I was confused a little bit by its price –it was possible to buy a rather big mini system for this money. But looking into his glowing eyes I decided to purchase it.

Design

Strange though it may seem, its design has suited me and him – it is the classics! Cabinets of satellites and the subwoofer are made of MDF, on the order of cherry tree. With such a design the trifonic will fit in any interior. The central unit, it is an amplifier at the same time, is made of mat black plastic with the glossy front panel.

The system is equipped with a LED display, which is able to operate in the standby mode for hours, with the pleasant subdued backlighting of the reddish color. The central unit can be positioned both vertically and horizontally and it can be used also as a support for a monitor. Satellites have special fastenings on the rear panel for the wall mounting. The remote control lies in the hand comfortably, it is the intuitive remote control and there are no problems to use it.

The system found its place in our apartment at once. Satellites were mounted on a wall on each side of the monitor. The central unit was placed next to the monitor, but the subwoofer was positioned on the floor diametrically opposite to the system unit.

Sounding

The first thing I did, I substituted acoustic wires. The included wires were thin and not of high quality, they strived to fall out from their jacks and, to be honest, they were shortish.

I put a good acoustic cable with 2 mm cross-section and the sound got better at once. Most probably the supplied cables serve to check the system operability. This perhaps is the only defect.

Now we’ll speak straight about sounding. The system lays claim to Hi-Fi sounding. For this purpose passive speakers are used in the trifonic. Two-way satellites are equipped with fabric tweeters. The tone compensation amplifies the lowest and highest sounds and equalizes the sound stage for a user. The estimated and checked elasticity of cones enables to provide quite smooth amplitude-frequency characteristic in the frequency range 150–25,000 Hz specified for satellites.

The standard terminal block for acoustic cables and a phase inverter are located on the rear side of loudspeakers. A quite big subwoofer cone (165 mm) makes it possible to reproduce the fixed 35 – 150 Hz low-frequency range naturally and uniformly.

As a result the system has natural and soft sound with clearly defined low frequencies. High frequencies are clear and pellucid. The speaker system reproduces practically all the movies, all music genres and computer games.

Battle-scene stages sound especially vividly. The Loudness tone compensation system equalizes the power of basses and high-frequencies. That is the total power is not required for the completeness of sound perception, the system sounds clear and smoothly without distortions with low volume level as well. There are no any background or intraframe vibrations in loudspeakers without load.

Construction

The audio path of the system is assembled based on three microcircuits, which are quite popular in the construction of modern multimedia complexes and automobile audio and video equipment.

The first microcircuit is a four-channel switched audio processing unit on the PT2313L CMOS chip produced by Princeton Technology Company, which serves as a preliminary amplifier, tone control, input selector, etc.

Other two TRA3123D2 microcircuits produced by Texas Instruments Company (24 pins, TSSOP case, closed with a heat-removing radiator) serve as the end D-class power amplifier. Every such chip is able to oscillate two channels with 4 Ohm load to 25 W power per channel with 27 V supply voltage.

One of these microcircuits is responsible for stereophonic operation of satellites, the second one – for the subwoofer operation. According to the declared specifications the total harmonic distortion factor + noise (THD+N) with 4 Ohm load and with 10 W output power does not exceed 0.08 %, and the signal-to-noise ratio with the maximum volume level at THD+N < 1 % and f = 1 kHz is approximately equal to 99 dB. This can be considered a worthy level for a multimedia amplifier of such class.

Functionality

The system is equipped with FM tuner and LED display. The radio sounding is quite decent even with the included aerial. Radio stations can be picked up both in automatic and in manual mode; the system has the radio station storage function. Information about FM frequency in operation is displayed on the LED display. In the standby mode there is a clock in the 24 hour format on the display. An alarm clock, unfortunately, is not available.

HF and LF controls are used for the sound control. There are USB and SD ports there to listen to audio tracks. During playback from a USB flash drive or SD card the system memorizes a track after turning it off, but after turning on it starts playback of the interrupted track. There is the headphones jack and universal mini-jack input on the front panel of the central unit. There is a PC input and universal input on the rear panel.

Personal impressions

Well, I and my son placed the appliance. All his impressions were expressed by one word – super! My impressions were a little bit various.

The first thing. If the sound is taken from a computer, then the PC player and equalizer are to be adapted. I looked through comments about this model in the internet, every third person reports about the high-frequency background noise in speakers. I want to say to these people – adapt your player!

If there is no background noise from a flash memory drive or during listening to the radio, so the matter is not in the appliance, but in a sound source! I have run this aggregate in all modes – my impressions have been only positive, no high-frequency background noise has been in loudspeakers!

The second thing. The bass is really colored very well.

The third thing. For computer games the sound is the real deal! The detail of the playing field elaboration amazes.

The fourth thing. When watching movies on-line, the system holds the sound stage perfectly well, dialogues are clear and dynamic and battle stages strike by their reality. The volume is quite enough; the system sounds a room with an area of 16 m2 less than with the half of volume, the sound is distinct and there is no wow in basses.

I and my son are quite satisfied, he feels comfortable during games and when watching reels with his friends, it is convenient for me to listen to the news in the morning and to drink coffee to nice music.
