This time SVEN MS-1090 2.1 channel speaker system has been to our test laboratory. The model has total power 40 W (18 W to the subwoofer, 11 W per each speaker) and reproduces frequencies in the range between 50 Hz to 20 kHz. The speaker system is equipped with the built-in audio player for file playing from USB flash memories and SD cards, as well as the remote control is supplied jointly with the system.
Package contents of SVEN MS-1090
The speaker system was delivered to our test laboratory inside a blue-and-white carton.
We extracted the following set from there:
- Two satellites.
- Subwoofer.
- Remote control with a battery.
- Mini jack to 2хRCA cable.
- Documentation package.
The set is minimalistic, but most commonly nothing is required of speakers except for the sound.
Design and specifications of SVEN MS-1090
Cases of satellites within SVEN MS-1090 are MDF with a glossy black plastic on the front panel.
The opened loud speakers are located on the front panel as well in hollows with the metallic paint rings. Every speaker is equipped with one-inch tweeter and one three-inch second loud speaker.
In whole satellites are not very big, just 93x183x136 mm with the weight 531 and 532 g.
Non-removable cables with painted RCA connectors for connecting to the amplifier in the subwoofer are located on the rear sides of speakers.
There are four soft foam material legs on the bottom of speakers.
The subwoofer is contained in a black MDFcase with a plastic front panel. The device weight is 3004 g, and its dimensions are 140x298x283 mm with the loud speaker 4.5 inch in diameter.
There are the back lighting brand logo, operation indicator, remote control sensor and all control buttons on the right side of the subwoofer:
- Play Back / Pause.
- Volume increase / next track.
- Volume decrease / previous track.
- Mute mode.
- USB / SD selection.
- Equalizer – selection from several built-in presets.
- Repeat.
There is only the phase inverter opening on the left side of the subwoofer.
Slots for SD card and USB port for connecting carriers with musical compositions are located in the top corner of the device right panel.
The following is located on the rear side:
- Bass volume control.
- 2 × RCA audio input.
- 2 × RCA audio output to connect satellites.
- ON / OFF switch.
- Non-removable power cable.
Four soft legs are fixed on the subwoofer bottom.
SVEN MS-1090 testing
The manufacturer declared in SVEN MS-1090 specifications that its power is 40 W (RMS) and the reproducing frequency range is between 50 Hz to 20 kHz, which we checked in RightMark Analyzer Pro.
There is a few distinctions between satellites; they are mainly in the area of middle-high frequencies. In whole, the having been got amplitude-frequency characteristic has only sharp drops of the diagram in the middle bass area and 2 kHz, but the more smooth dropping is observed in the area of middle frequencies. The characteristic measuredat the manufacturer’s plant does not have such “steep slopes”, maybe due to differences in conditions during measuring the amplitude-frequency characteristic, for example, a room.
However, this affects the sounding not greatly – by ear such dips are not notice able at all, but actually, any content will not disappoint you with the quality. Further more, equalizers easily compensate such distortions of the amplitude-frequency characteristic. Users of personal computers will be helped by a program equivalent built-inpractically into any audio player, because now even smartphones most commonly have the possibility to setup additional proper applications. Let alone possibilities of modern receivers, and the speaker system has some sound presetting sin the built-in player.
The separate volume control of basses is highly easy-to-use as well. However, the absence of the master volume indication on the device is not very comfortable during the use of the built-in player. Why? Imagine that you insert a USB flash drive with the classic music because you want to drink a cup of coffee at ease, but you have there the maximum volume level of the previous rock-marathon in revenge for the perforator of neighbors. And that's it – slight grey hair to the crescendo of a symphony orchestra is guaranteed to you. Because 40 W (RMS) sufficiently close describe possibilities of this (though it is compact) speaker system to sound a space – in our case the device covered 20 m2 with no trouble at all.
But it is more comfortable to connect a source like a smartphone – the absence of indication can be compensated by the preliminary volume reduction on the device.
The remote control, which is supplied with SVEN MS-1090, although is compact, but it is abundantly covered with buttons – there not only custom controls from the subwoofer case are duplicated, but there are functions of transition inside levels of catalogues, as well as buttons with figures.
The battery of CR 2025 standard powers the remote control, the size of which is 87x40x6 mm.
The remote control operates nice; keystroke is clear and control delays are minimum. It is maybe worth noting the one limitation only; the remote control operates only in line-of-sight of IR sensor located on the front subwoofer panel.
All in all during SVEN MS-1090 testing the only one short coming has been revealed – it is the step volume control together with the non-availability of its indication on the case. We have had no claims at all to the sounding proper, as well as to the manufacturing quality of the speaker system components.
SVEN MS-1090: conclusions
Advantages of SVEN MS-1090:
- Good sounding.
- Built-in audioplayer.
- Volume control of basses.
- Remote control.
- Nice design.
Disadvantages of SVEN MS-1090:
- Absence of anyvolume control indication.
The price of SVEN MS-1090 is approximately RUB 2,400 at the time of testing. In spite of an unobvious solution to except the visible indication of the volume level, this speaker system has quite good sounding, built-in audio player of wide spread musical formats and compact design. The model exerts itself particularly good when connected to a source with the content of high quality.
