We won't have the heart to name a new speaker system of the Finnish company SVEN as a standard one. Because MS-350BL is a real multimedia music centre, which will enable you to unload your workplace of troublesome wires a little bit and some time in Sunday evening to organize a merry karaoke party with your friends. The whole titbit lies in the fact that this 2.1 speaker system supports Bluetooth (the wireless interconnection technology) and is equipped with the microphone jack. In general, it will provide the quality sound during all your favorite entertainments.

If you really decide to purchase such a system, it will arrive to your home in a compact and light carton, where besides two satellites and a subwoofer you will find a remote control, User’s Manual and a cable to connect the speaker system to your computer. Yes, it is not an error: SVEN tries to please everybody and provides a possibility to connect the speaker system both by wireless and by more traditional wire method.

Satellites, as speakers for reproduction of high and medium frequencies are named today, are made of black-silvery plastic. These speakers are single-sideband and in order to remove high frequency shortcomings the developers designed them in such a way that while being placed on a table the sound was directed exactly to where it is needed, i.e. into your ears. Speakers are fastened on small amusing supports-paws.

The subwoofer, which promises quite good basses to us, is made of MDF with plastic elements on the front panel. Its loudspeaker is located on the bottom; that is why this element has a small support also. But a phase inverter, i.e. a plastic tube, is taken out to the front side, so thanks to it you can move this speaker close to the wall without the loss of the sound quality. If there is no place at all on the table, the subwoofer, in principle, can be placed on the floor as well. However, the first variant is more preferable, because there is an information display on the front panel of the low-frequency speaker, which displays an operation mode, as well as the volume level. Otherwise, you will have to plunge under the table regularly to check a proper mode.

There are connection jacks on the subwoofer rear side. Let us note, by the way, that you will be able to connect easily not only a microphone, but also headphones to such a speaker system. It takes only to press a button on the remote control marked with a corresponding symbol to select the wireless mode. There is another option: to press volume control buttons simultaneously – the effect will be the same. By the way, you can playback music from any device, which supports Bluetooth, whether it be a notebook, iPad or smartphone. Quickly, simply and very convenienly!

Well, how do matters stand with the sound, will you ask? Very good indeed. You should not to discriminate speakers according to their outward sign: plastic case and compact dimensions convey nothing; there are a lot of examples of both plastic and wooden speaker systems with disgusting sound.

Fortunately, it does not concern SVEN MS-350BL. The speaker system reproduces soft, natural and dense sound with deep basses and ringing high frequencies at the same time. It equally splendidly reproduces the human voice, instruments of symphonic music and compositions in lighter popular entertainment. Such a speaker system copes with sounding of movies quite adequately. And it indicates that it is quite universal not only as of methods of connection, but regarding operation versions as well.

So what do you wish more from an inexpensive and compact speaker system affordable to the wide range of customers? Except perhaps the appearance of different color versions – white, blue, red and, of course, yellow color versions. How do you think, the demand for them will be great?

It seems that we have already met every version regarding multimedia speaker systems: ordinary speaker systems of different formats, sound bars, systems with the built-in file player. To the effect that the speaker system is very compact, we were given to understand by the carton itself. It is quite small and very light, so even a child can carry it away.

There is a speaker system inside the carton, which is traditionally very correctly packed, as well as the remote control, cable for connection to PC and documentation.

In principle, nothing more is required to operate such a system, but in this case, it will be very useful to read the User’s Manual.

Design and Control

The compact speaker system consists of the pair of plastic satellites with built-in supports and a small subwoofer made of MDF with plastic elements on the front panel.

Satellites are single sideband; they are designed in such a way that being placed on the table surface to direct the sound straight to the ears. It is a particularly useful feature given that a single sideband design usually leads to some deficit of high frequencies, especially along the loudspeaker axis.

The support has also a different color in comparison with cases of speakers. Speakers are made of glossy black plastic, the support – of mat silvery plastic. You should take them, naturally, for the mat part not to produce fingerprints.

The subwoofer case looks quite originally as compared with the majority of similar systems. The large port of a phase inverter is located on the front panel; due to this, the subwoofer can be placed close to the wall.

The subwoofer loudspeaker is located at the bottom. An optimal placement for the sound would be the floor, of course, but certain features of the speaker system presuppose, however, that we will place it on a table.

And this is due to the following: the upper segment of a plastic ring, which frames the phase inverter port presents a display, which displays an operation mode, as well as the volume level. Lower, on the subwoofer base, there are volume control buttons. The Bluetooth logotype indicates about the most important feature of the speaker system, i.e. a possibility of operate via wireless interface.

Inputs for traditional wire connection are located behind in the support. It is interesting that the speaker system, besides headphones, also allows connecting a microphone.

In order to begin the Bluetooth mode operation, you should either to select the corresponding mode on the remote control or to press and hold the volume control buttons simultaneously. At that, the speaker system can be identified in the Bluetooth menu of a smartphone, or a notebook and they can be connected as an ordinary headset. As a result, you will be able not only listen to the music without wires, but to control playback from the remote control as well. It is really convenient very much and distinguishes advantageously our small system from competitors. Naturally, the advantage is useful only in case, if there are devices with Bluetooth in the house.

Listening

SVEN is a company, which is for those people, who have already in contact with the acoustics world within more than ten years, and, first of all, it is associated with its full-size products. Wooden speakers as big as the half of a system unit – that is what the first occurs. And, that is why, you are always at first alerted to small speakers. However, novelties of the last years have proved that the quite good sound can “live” even in satellites with modest dimensions, especially if a subwoofer helps them with low basses.

SVEN MS-350BL is not an exception. It produces soft, clean and quite detailed sound with quite good bass for its dimensions. The correct placing of satellites will allow to get even quite good stereo effect, especially in movies. There is the deficit of the highest frequencies as follows from the design, as well the sound proportion. To be insured against distortions the system was limited by the maximum volume, however, we think that it is possible to squeeze a thought more decibels from these speakers.

Speakers are best suitable for sounding of a workplace or as a musical center to work jointly with a mobile telephone, iPad, etc. In such a scenario of their usage, you can place them, for example, in a bedroom or on a kitchen.

Conclusion

SVEN MS-350BL speaker system turned out an interesting system for those people, who need the universality of connection. Bluetooth support extends scenarios of the usage of traditional 2.1speaker systems considerably, converting it into a peculiar wireless dock-station for a mobile telephone or iPad, or wireless speakers for a notebook.

Speakers sound quite good, they have a pleasant design. The absence of the reserve volume can be referred to disadvantages. It is possible to squeeze more even from miniature loudspeakers, and that is proved by some other models of SVEN speaker systems.
