Support SVEN Pro+ 1000 Line-Interactive UPS: A Beacon of Light

For many years SVEN company has been known to Russian customers as a manufacturer of computer peripherals, especially of different audio devices and systems such as headphones, microphones, headsets and speaker systems for computer and household electronics with excellent quality-to-price ratio. At the same time SVEN company supplies an impressive range of different electrical products and voltage stabilizing systems such as cables, electrical wiring hardware, batteries, uninterruptible power systems, mains power filters etc. These products are much rarer reported of than SVEN-made speakers and keyboards, but today we’ll fill up this gap by introducing a newly-developed SVEN Pro+ 1000 UPS model to our readers.

SVEN Pro+ 1000 UPS pertains to line-interactive systems with built-in battery and built-in mains voltage regulator. Thus, this UPS allows you not only to shut down the operating system correctly and switch off your PC in case of sudden power failure, but also to maintain constant output supply voltage by ramping it up or down as necessary in case of non-stable power supply networks, which are more than enough now in Russia. UPS is also furnished with short-circuit protection system, pulse and high frequency noise suppression feature, transformer overheating protection.

But this is not all. Because of its cold-start feature SVEN Pro+ 1000 UPS can be forced on even in the absence of mains voltage thus making it possible to complete the urgent tasks. Moreover, USB functionality will enable tracking of all critical parameters of mains voltage directly on PC monitor, viewing events logs; all this functionality may be customized to any individual power network conditions and personal preferences. Among the setup preferences there is also an automatic shutdown option for abnormal power performance.

The decisive edge among the bundle of «intellectual» capabilities of SVEN Pro+ 1000 UPS which adds up to its advantage over its competitive counterparts is large multifunctional LCD with backlit front panel capable of showing all vital operational parameters including input and output voltage, mains frequency, load and actual battery discharge level.

To make the picture complete, let’s add that besides the 1000 VA maximum load model being the subject matter of this article, SVEN Pro+ family with built-in LCD also includes modifications with 650 VA, 850 VA and 1500 VA maximum loads. Modifications without display, with and without USB there certainly much more.

SVEN Pro+ 1000 UPS comes in modest cardboard box with main specifications, however, clearly indicated on it. The package of the unit is expectedly standard one consisting of the proper UPS with integrated power cable, USB cable, CD with manuals and software suite, a pair of spare fuses, operation manual and warranty card.

Despite the classical mini-tower shape traditional to many modern UPSs, SVEN Pro+ 1000 model has an advantageous distinction of rugged steel (not plastic!) housing. Because of unusual front panel location of multifunctional LCD the UPS may even be mistaken for desktop mini-PC. Besides the proper display the front panel accommodates also power-on button.

The rest of interface is located on the back panel of the housing as follows: RJ-11 input and output ports for noise filtering in communication networks, USB port for PC connection, two CEE 7/4 euro sockets for connecting the load, fuse socket and power cable in.

Now some words about key specifications. SVEN Pro+ 1000 model is designed for 1000 VA & 600 W maximum operation. With input AC power voltage fluctuations being within 165/275 V the guaranteed output voltage will be 220 V ± 10 %.

The unit employs two replaceable batteries of 12 V operating voltage and 7 Aph capacity capable of maintaining offline (batteries-fed) operation of the plugged-in electronic devices within 3 to 20 minutes whereas standard switching time to stand-by power supply mode is 10 ms max. The UPS’s overall dimensions are 124 х 220 х 380 mm and the weight is about 10,5 kgs.

The operation principle of SVEN Pro+ 1000, like any other line-interactive UPS is described by two operational conditions. If supply voltage input from the power network is active, UPS filters the undesired pulses and induced HFs off and then feeds it to AVR which steps it up or down to the rated voltage of 220 V as necessary and then supplies it to the output sockets. In this mode the batteries stand idle or under charge as necessary.

Network voltage supply failure immediately triggers HF inverter module which converts the DC voltage from the batteries to ~220 V supply voltage with subsequent smoothing of response to an approximated harmonic curve. All these processes are controlled by the built-in digital microprocessor controller which provides monitoring of all processes and tracking of all actual parameters via USB interface and can be customized directly in the window of software program supplied with the unit.

Especially noteworthy are the intuitive and informative features of built-in LED display; it is composed of multi-segmented indicators and semigraphical elements with pleasant blue backlighting: we see here input and output voltage level indicators, battery load and discharge rate indication etc. In cases of emergency, when batteries charge drops below the allowable level, additional audible alarm beep peculiar to most UPSes is triggered.

Nonetheless, UPSilon 2000 utility interface supplied with SVEN Pro+ 1000 UPS (there are versions available not only for Windows, but also for Linux and FreeBSD operating systems) is much more intuitive; moreover, it offers a number of unique options for monitoring and setup.

Take, for example, Setup Menu packed with lots of tabs: here you can set up not only monitoring modes and automatic shutdown, but also the option of announcing various events by email or SMS.

Moreover, the user has at his disposal also a useful Self-test option with different settings furnishing him with the ability of evaluating operational parameters set-points and even making some approximate estimation of his UPS batteries operating capability.

Among numerous tabs of this utility program there is also an option of graphic representation of both UPS operating modes described above, which should be especially pleasant to those users who are not too much versed in the intricacies of household electronics adjustment. Information on all events recorded with this utility can be displayed both as a list and as a visual table.

We conducted operational tests of SVEN Pro+ 1000 UPS with most different types of loads, from laptop and desktop PCs to a powerful electric heater. In all these cases the offline operation time, naturally, was different, but in case of typical 20” screen desktop system it made about 17 minutes. Especially pleasing was to observe how the UPS switched to automatic shutdown mode coped with the task of closing all the system windows and shutting down the system almost in no time.

The ultimate verdict is as follows: the handy, easily adjustable and operable SVEN Pro+ 1000 uninterruptible power system fully deserves the price of 3,500 rubles (plus or minus some hundred rubles as of the article writing date) which is bidden for it in e-commerce network. Besides stability of operation, workmanship and convenient adjustment and monitoring utility software, SVEN Pro+ 1000 model can boast of a built-in indication of all mains supply key parameters, a unique feature for this price segment.
