SVEN SPS-707 is the most recent stereophonic development of the Finnish company SVEN. Designed for sufficiently fastidious users, it will make an excellent pair both to a stationary computer and to a notebook, and thanks to its classic, and in this case not lacking in elegance design, it will perfectly blend with modern interior.
This two-channel set is executed in black color with the use of gloss. The height of both cases is 25 cm, they are made of MDF and covered with adhesive decorative film, but the front glossy straps are decorated with grey rings, which frame loudspeakers.
This model has dome tweeters equipped with cloth cones. Subwoofer has 75 mm cone with a soft rubber suspension, but phase inverters located at the rear side of speakers increase still further the efficiency of low frequencies.
There are volume and timbre control buttons at the top of the active speaker, separately for high and low frequencies. The package includes a remote control as well, with its help a user can make necessary settings a good deal conveniently, especially as for this purpose he will not even to get up from a sofa.
As regards the connection, then SVEN SPS-707 has just three independent inputs, two of them are designed for the sound output from a TV-set and computer, and the third one is for iPads and smartphones. The product package includes also the pair of signal cables, acoustic cable, power cord and the User’s Manual.
The declared power of this speaker system is 50 W, and it is quite sufficient for sounding of a mid-size room. In fact the speaker system provides quite smooth gain frequency characteristic, demonstrating the impressive for its class unevenness in the medium-frequency band, i.e. ±3 dB.
The general frequency range of the model is 45 – 25,000 Hz; at that speakers are activated starting from 50 Hz providing the excellent sound panorama with good deep bass. Trebles, in turn, turn out transparent and clear, and medium frequencies are smooth and detailed. The model, by the way, can be recommended not only for listening to the music, but for sounding movies as well, it copes with this role equally well.
SVEN SPS-707 stereophonic speaker system is one of new products of a well-known SVEN Company, which was presented quite recently. And it has to be said that the total generalized character in this case turns out quite prepossessing. Speakers have small cases 25 cm high; therefore they perfectly do for the table use jointly with a computer. At that the declared power will be quite enough for a mid-size room, and loudspeakers of high quality only confirm this assumption. Naturally, as any modern model, SPS-707 is outfitted with a possibility of wireless control.
Package content
The package content of the speaker system is quite standard, and besides speakers there is a remote control, two signal cables, acoustic cable, power cord and the User’s Manual in the carton.
Exterior
The model appearance does not seem habitual, i.e. SVEN SPS-707 does not obviously resemble the previous series at all, and it stands to reason that this development is a fundamentally new one. The model has MDF cases less than one cm thick, and the qualitative adhesive black film is used at the top. Front panels are undoubtedly of modern style. Plastic straps have glossy texture, but grey rings underline the borders of loudspeakers perfectly.
As to proper speakers, then we can only praise a producer, as they look quite decently. The bass loudspeaker is equipped with the cone of approximately 75 mm in diameter and soft rubber suspension. And in order to increase the efficiency on low frequencies, there are phase inverters behind every speaker. That is the reason that we recommend to leave a little free space behind speakers while placing them, in this case SVEN SPS-707 will sound much more attractively. The tweeter has dome design with cloth cone.
Speakers in this case are controlled with buttons located on the top panel of the active speaker. The only ergonomic inconvenience is that, while sitting on a chair or in an arm-chair we just do not see these buttons on the speaker placed on the table. However you can get used to it quite quickly, beginning to move between them without looking. The logic of regulations does not give rise to complaints; indicators clear display the selected input and function, however the system is not lacking in typical shortcomings. We cannot see the digital value of a controlled parameter, and after turning-off they reset to the base level.
By the way, it is more convenient to use the remote control instead of buttons on the case, because it supports all and everyone functions. And for this reason the location of main buttons loses some urgency at all. The infrared detector is disguised on the front panel of the active speaker; therefore you have only to direct the remote control in its direction.
But on the other hand, it is envisaged three independent inputs at once in SVEN SPS-707. You can connect stationary sources, for example, a computer or TV-set, to two of them and a smartphone or iPad to the third input. In view of the fact that these devices are widespread, such a possibility is useful.
Design
In general, in appearance SVEN SPS-707 speaker system looks rather presentably and it is very interestingly as it is constructed inside. The first surprise of its construction, about which we can guess by a sticker with supply voltage indication (speakers operate from any mains from 100 to 240 V) was a pulse converter unit instead of a standard transformer. It is mounted on a small board, which as judged from its markings, the company orders at a third-party. The general fabrication level can be estimated as totally normal. Unfortunately, there are no markings at all with output parameters on the board; therefore we carried out some measurements. The power source provides the bipolar supply ±15 V. The loading test shows that with substantial currents the voltage is apt to the subsidence, for example, with the current 2 A it makes 10 V for each branch. In any case, we have about 40 W of honest power, which somehow conform the declared data.
The audio-frequency amplifier is built on TDA7265 microchip. Theoretically it provides 25 W per channel (with power supply ±20 V at loading 8 Ohm, distortions – 10 %). But in our case we can say about approximately10….15 real watts per channel with the normal distortion level, because speakers have 4 Ohm. The popular PT2313L audio processor is used to realize the digital control.
Practical testing
All that is left to do is to look at some real specifications of the system and to carry out the listening. And at once we can praise SVEN SPS-707 model for the quite smooth gain-frequency characteristic. It is obvious, that in the medium-frequency band the system demonstrates an impressive unevenness for its class, i.e. ±3 dB. Speakers are active starting from 50 Hz, therefore the sound impression is full, but you cannot feel the particular bass shortage.
According to subjective feelings SVEN SPS-707 speaker system plays nice. The system does not cover the lowest bass only, aside from that it is in apple pie order. Small loudspeakers surprise with smooth and lively middle frequencies with a good onset. High frequencies turn out clear and transparent. At that speakers save neutral color quite for a long time at the sound pressure increase, that makes it possible to sound mid-size rooms. Ability to arrange a correct stage is perfectly listened while viewing movies, so the model can be recommended for any home needs.
Conclusion
Taking everything into account we can say that the new stereophonic speaker system of a well-known company, undoubtedly, turned out successful. Having small dimensions SVEN SPS-707 provides smooth, fine and quite powerful sounding. Its potential is enough over and above to recommend speakers for would-be listeners.
