Tuki SVEN MS-920: Multimedia Sound

A “multimedia” inscription on any CD-ROM pack surprises nobody: it’s clear that the software supports a number of data presentation media such as photos, videos, animation, sound, text, 3D models etc. How do you think, what is the meaning of this word as it refers to SVEN MS-920 speaker systems?

Musing over this question, I opened the box with speakers where I found a subwoofer and two accurately shaped satellites painted in imitation of light-colored wood, signal cable and printed manual.

SVEN MS-920 speaker systems are implemented as three-way speakers. Rectangular satellites house HF and midrange drives while the cubic subwoofer incorporates a large bass speaker. Next to it a power supply and an amplifier with volume and tone controls are located. The subwoofer performs within 50-140 Hz while the satellites support 140-20 000 Hz. The system’s rated output is 10 + 2 × 8 W. LF-drive is furnished with 115 mm diameter cone, midrange drive – 65 mm cone and a “squeaker” – 25 mm cone. The manual contains a phrase that runs like this: “The products of Sven trademark are subject to continuous improvement”. Probably, it is due to this improvement that the bass driver in the package that we have put to test was found to be of lesser dimensions than those specified by the manufacturer, and its cone was shifted upwards from the aperture centre.

The manufacturer indicates minimum specifications for SVEN MS-920 which is but natural for the price of only 42 depreciating US dollars that are bidden now for three-way speaker systems made from wood fiber boards. It is a paradox that notwithstanding the total “digitization” of everything being underway nowadays, the audio engineering manufacturers depart from precise quantitative (which means digital) rated parameters thus forcing users to rely on qualitative (which means analogue) parameters which are happily decent enough with Sven MS-920 system considering its price.

First, the subwoofer sounds softly and heartfelt, clearly emphasizing the sounding of drums and bass guitar strings. Secondly, midrange frequencies sound distinctly and clearly though slightly “from afar” due to their reduced volume level. Thirdly, high frequencies are reproduced resonantly and vigorously with even the slightest dynamic marks discernible.

We recommend the SVEN MS-920 speaker system for those users who want to add sound to their computers without spending much. We think that the phrase “multimedia sound” should be understood as meaning “computer sound”.
